Assalamualaikum...
Salam Sayidul Ayyam... It's Jumaat people!! How are we today??
I am so energetic throughout this whole week. You know why??
I WAS HYPNOTIZED !!!!
I went to a workshop by Dr. Marina from my faculty (FSKM, UiTM).. It was specially for post-graduate students here in UiTM
As a summary, Dr. Marina and Dr. Rohana motivated us to proceed in our studies, do the research and try graduating on time (GOT). It was really full of spirit.
I think Dr. Marina was a bit anxious, so she had a few times and repeatedly had unfinished sentences. I know she meant well. But still awesome at the same time (you should ask the boss to give a big fat bonus for that matter, you know what I mean?).
I was impressed by the story of Dr. Rohana herself.. Doing her PHD and graduated ON TIME... with 2 kids delivered in between!!!! MasyaAllah!!!!
It really motivated me... Thanks Dr. Marina and Dr. Rohana....
The model GOT = 12JT + MB, will be implemented for good. InsyaAllah.
But what really shocked me, we got a FREE hypnotize session by Million Aura Consulting & Training. MasyaAllahu taala.. It was a blessing in disguised.
These two people, only a few hours had turned us into really fresh, pump-with-spirit, no-longer-afraid and motivated people.... Subhanallah!
The whole week, I was really focused on my studies and also my kids and family...
Never did I felt like giving up... How fascinating was that!!
They made me love being a MUSLIM MORE!!!
I seriously want to have that AURA... AURA Rasulullah:
1. Wajah berseri dan rupawan
2. Berkulit bersih
3. Tidak kurus dan tidak gemuk
4. Kata-kata yang menyejuk jiwa
5. Kehadiran menenangkan
I want to have that AURA, of course .
For more training with Million Aura, you can find them on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/millionaura
However, Allah has His own mysterious ways to help us.
Always remember when your spirit dampened, ALLAH IS ALWAYS WITH YOU...

Alif: A Special Journey on Learning (Part 3)
Assalamualaikum... and good day fellow readers.
It's really hazy outside. Here inside my office, I feel the haze too... Hazy from reading too many journals. I met my supervisor Prof Yap yesterday, so today is a calm day for me. I can chill for awhile.
I posted this experience on my facebook. Some gave great comments about Alif and encouragements too... Even one requested me to change to a more positive title. So from "Slow Learner' I change it to 'A Special Journey on Learning" for a positive effect.. InsyaAllah. Thank you for the comments, encouragement, positive vibes and doa.
Don't worry.. We are doing fine, InsyaAllah.
I am more worried about the #MH370 that has yet to be found. Let's all pray for their safety. I know some would think they have no hope at surviving, however I beg to differ. I still have high hopes that all the passengers and crew of #MH370 are alive and surviving. I just pray to Allah that the authorities will find them as quickly as possible. I know how it feels to lost the one you love. Believe me.
Ok, back to Alif's story....
After we got the results that Alif was Dyslexic, I broke the news to my Papa... I did mention about my concerns before. He actually googled and read articles about Dyslexia. He agreed that maybe Alif had a learning problem. Papa and Ibu has given all the support we need to keep us going. Motivated us in all ways. I love you Papa and Ibu.
In my last post http://sunshine-lynx.blogspot.com/2014/03/alif-slow-learner-part-2.html I mentioned about we had an appointment with En. Osman from Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Selangor, right??
Well, before meeting with En. Osman, my dearest friend Reen got some information about Pendidikan Khas from her brother in law. He was the headmaster at Sekolah Rendah Putra Perdana Puchong. She told me, going to Pendidkan Khas was also a good option. That was after I went to Alif's school to ask about the special leave Puan Hajah Muliani mentioned before, and the teachers there told me that there is no such thing as cuti khas (special leave). When Reen mentioned about Pendidikan Khas, I cried. My son is not an OKU! She calmed me down and saud, you better contact people from Jabatan Pendidikan and ask.
Yup. I did that.
It was Alif's first back to school. I didn't iron on his school badge or name tag because I was uncertain of which school Alif will have to go. After a delirious and exhausting wait, we finally met En. Osman. He was..... a middle age man, soft spoken and very concerned. He asked us how did we came to the conclusion that Alif was Dyslexic?
After a long explanation, he noded in between and then he smiled.
He said, "are you really sure that he is dyslexic? Is there any medical proof?"
My husband and I was speechless.
Dr. Aziz or Puan Hajah Muliani from DAM didn't gave any report. Not in my emails, not in hard proof. Nothing.
En. Osman continued, "I suggest you go and see a peadatrician, specializing in children development" and then he mentioned a few hospitals. Government hopitals being Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) and Hospital Tunku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) Klang; Semi-government hospitals being HUKM and PPUM, and a few private hospitals Sunway Medical Center and Sime Darby Medical Center. He told us, if you have the money and want to know the results fast, private hospitals is the best choice.
"Why should you do this test...??" he asked.
Of course we just smiled. At this point, we were lost. Back to square one.
He said, people at DAM only test for Dyslexia. Maybe Alif suffers from something else than Dyslexia. Maybe he has a combination of Dyslexia and global delay. There are endless possibilities, he said. "If Alif truly is Dyslexic or any of the learning disabilities, he can apply for an OKU card and the government will pay him RM150 per month".
The moment he said that, my eyes teared up. How can he say my son is an OKU???? He's fine!!!!!! I cannot accept that fact!!!
En. Osman sort of read my mind.
"Don't get me wrong. It's not like he is 'cacat'. It's just the privilege he can get from the government to help him grow. If you don't want the money you can just keep it in his savings.. Grow the money. The OKU card allows him to study at his own pace. He can extend his primary school up to 2-3 years if he can't catch up". The last point was the biggest privilege for Alif, I told to my husband.
After a longgggggg longggg lecture on how we should consider his suggestion, he did mention about changing Alif to Pendidikan Khas, where he can get special attention by specially trained teachers. "He will get all the attention he need," said En. Osman.
My eyes light up. That's a good plan. "However, it all depends on the test results from the peads" he add. "duhhhhh".... But, he was helpful enough to give us a list of schools with special programs (Pendidikan Khas and Inklusif).
We were so thankful to Allah to have met En. Osman. Pendidikan Khas was not his forte but he insisted to help. Alhamdulillah, may Allah bless his soul.
That same day, we went to DEMC to get an appointment with the peads.
What an encounter, I tell you.
En. Osman gave us a form that listed all the types of tests the peads should do for Alif. The problem was the title of the form...
At DEMC the personnel at the counter took the form and directly told us, "Owh, kita x buat test utk dapatkan kad OKU!!!!"
What??!!!
You can see the look on my husband's face. It turns red and only if the ears can burst steam... hahaha.. it would be similar to Popaye the cartoon!
I didn't blame the counter personnel. After explanation, she asked the staff nurse inside. Same reaction, "kita tak buat test OKU ni"... Pffftttttt... Again explain... untill they get it... I myself almost lost it when she couldn't understand our needs. She didn't even refer to the peads clinic (it was already closed, btw)... She concluded that DEMC didn't have the specialty. FULL STOP.
I didn't like the service at DEMC. However, it was still our panel clinic, so.... just bear with it.
KPJ was more helpful.
Even the specilist, a Dato' came down from his office and explained to us that they didn't have the specialist there. However, he referred us to Dr. Sofia Ali at SDMC. "She's the best in children development".
That's how we met Dr. Sofia Ali, Alif's doctor today.
To be continued.

Alif: A Special Journey on Learning (Part 2)
Salam and a good day ahead to all...
Sorry, I can't resist myself from Part 2 of Alif's story.
People say when doing your PHD all sorts of so called 'dugaan' will come to you in any version... right?? My 'dugaan' for PHD comes through Alif.
Where did I stop...??
Oh yes. How did I detect Alif with a learning disability?
Have you ever watched "Taare Zameen Par". A movie featuring Aamir Khan with a Dyslexic kid?
It is available on YouTube. Such a sad story about the struggles on a Dyslexic kid and the parents. I cried watching that movie because I didn't know how to help Alif and I know Alif is just like that kid in the movie. The symptoms were there.
Remember in Part 1, I mentioned I didn't have a clue on how to help Alif??
Well, Allah the Most Merciful heard my cries, my pledge. One day while driving, on ikim.fm (yes... I only listen to ikim.fm and not other popular radio stations like era.fm or hot.fm.) there was a segment on Dyslexia and ADHD. All the traits almost fits Alif's characteristics. So, my initial conclusion was maybe Alif was Dyslexic.
So what are the characteristics of a child having Dyslexia??
Here are only some general traits of a Dyslexic kid.
- Appears bright, highly intelligent, and articulate but unable to read, write, or spell at grade level.
- Labelled lazy, dumb, careless, immature, "not trying hard enough," or "behavior problem."
- Isn't "behind enough" or "bad enough" to be helped in the school setting.
- High in IQ, yet may not test well academically; tests well orally, but not written.
- Feels dumb; has poor self-esteem; hides or covers up weaknesses with ingenious compensatory strategies; easily frustrated and emotional about school reading or testing.
- Talented in art, drama, music, sports, mechanics, story-telling, sales, business, designing, building, or engineering.
- Seems to "Zone out" or daydream often; gets lost easily or loses track of time.
- Difficulty sustaining attention; seems "hyper" or "daydreamer."
- Learns best through hands-on experience, demonstrations, experimentation, observation, and visual aids.
These are some of Alif's arts for me, all when he was 6 years old.
This one was one art at the Genius Aulad Family Day, aided by my husband. Hahaha.. Don't be fooled. Mostly was my husband's idea. Only 100% from Alif was his name.
And this one is his coloring skill. Other kids will mix colors and play with other colors to make it interesting. Not Alif. He likes green so he colored everything in green.
The biggest problem is that he couldn't read or count.
When you can't read, you will not able to spell correctly. When you cannot spell correctly you can't even write proper answers. Am I right?? So you will be left behind. In Alif's problem, even copying is a humungous task for him. He copies very slowly and he usually misses a letter or two. Sometimes a word or two. Worst, even without realizing it!!
As a mother, I just want Alif to be able to read, write and count. After that... I think he can conquer the world (ok, let's conquer the school first).
After listening to ikim.fm., I browse the net. I googled and found a test on Dyslexia and I tried it.
I used this online test from http://www.dyslexia.com/dyslexiatest.htm
You can find a good test online too. Just to list some:
http://www.lexercise.com/dyslexia-services/
http://www.beatingdyslexia.com/online-dyslexia-test.html
I googled more for treatments and availability in Malaysia. I found Dyslexia Dissociation Malaysia or DAM. There's one centre in Section 7. I have been in Shah Alam for a longggggg time and I never knew about this (See?? Only when you need it the you search for it). How Allah has been helping us through this painstaking process.
I called the owner of DAM Seksyen 7, Puan Hajah Muliani. Her advise was to do a proper test at DAM Titiwangsa (Why? Because the expert is there and not at Section 7). For the test you have to pay RM200. Meanwhile, get a doctor's appointment to check Alif's psychical condition.
So, I booked an appointment to do the test and was scheduled on December 2nd 2013. Physically, Alif was examined at DEMC and he was fit.
The day of the test came. My husband applied a leave on that day and was suppose to come along, but under unseen circumstances, he couldn't be with us (konon nak tunggu indon pasang grill, tapi indon tu tipu!). I was furious and alone with Alif. I even had to change from a Blackberry user to an Android user, just to use Waze to get to DAM Titiwangsa (Sorry BB!!).
Still remembered, that day was raining heavily. A sign from Allah, maybe (hujan rahmat). We arrived at DAM Titiwangsa just 5 minutes before the scheduled appointment (Alhamdulillah!). Even using Waze I still got lost (Damn Waze with no GPS signal at some locations!!!).
At first, I was puzzled. It looked like an old abandoned house. The grills were locked. The sound of kids voices, learning, and teachers were giving instructions, were really apparent. This center is not only a facility for doing testing, but also teaching the Dyslexic kids. We were welcomed by an Indian lady, a warm inviting smile for us. She handed a form for me to fill, paid the RM200 fees and we waited for the doctor to arrive.
Less than 10 minutes, Dr. Aziz (if I remembered correctly) came and assess Alif. After half an hour, Dr. Aziz came with Alif and confronted me. He asked, "How long have you known he is in this condition?". I answered "A year or so.. I might be in denial before. but I wanted to help him so badly." He smiled. Then he showed evidence as to why Alif is a Dyslexic. All the assessment on reading and writing were profound to exhibit that Alif was a Dyslexic kid. Only one thing that really bothers me. He showed me a paper where Alif wrote A-Z. Now, Alif for sure can write A-Z correctly coz I have seen many times. The paper shows Alif has written A-Y correctly but the Z was a mirror image. I was perplexed! Alif wrote his name correctly and the Z is a Z and not an S. I told him about my doubts but he said firmly, Alif is Dyslexic. Although with a bit of doubts, what Dr. Aziz said further confirmed my instinct about Alif's learning disability. Dr. Aziz said the report will be email to me formally in two weeks time.

The same day, we went to DAM Section 7, meet up with Puan Hajah Muliani. She told us about the steps that she will take to ensure Alif's condition cured. First, Alif will take a 6 months leave from school and study only at DAM from 8.30 to 12 everyday. After by which, he can surely read, write and count using their special syllabus.
For me and my husband, that sounded like a great plan. She will write a letter to Alif's school and Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Selangor to request for a special leave for him. The fees for every month was RM550. A lot??? Yup... Anything for your kids, of course.
After 2 weeks, still no email from DAM Titiwangsa or Dr. Aziz. I contacted DAM Titiwangsa, no answers. I contacted Puan Hajah Muliani, she said she will help. A few days after that, I followed up. She forgot about Alif's case (of course, all excuses... cliche sangat!). I really don't know where should Alif start school?? Should we proceed with the special program at DAM Section 7 or not????
A sudden call from Puan Hajah Muliani really was a relief. But her voice turned us the other way around. She gave us a phone number. An officer, Encik Osman from Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Selangor wants us to see us. We were asked to go and make an appointment with Encik Osman the next day, the first day of school day for Alif at Standard Two!
What next??
I can tell you the meeting with Encik Osman turned our decision 360 degrees.
To be continued.
